The Religions
First there was The Void. Nothingness. Empty abyss that stretched into eternity. It was a lack of time, a lack of space, a lack of matter. Until it grew to take a form. It took the appearance of what modern beings would call a dragon. A dragon with wings made of starlight and space, and breath of stars and plasma. Its nest a creation of nebulae and cosmos. With it came planets, which it claimed as part of its hoard. It was so big that it distorted the very fabric of space and time, which led to the creation of the primordials.
There were four of them, and The Void granted them the dominion of one planet, Eale. So they joined with the planet, the Earth, in an of Eale. Growing. Shaping. Changing. The Moon, with her dominion over the oceans, flowing, wiping away. The Sun, who destroyed as much as he creat-ed in his efforts to heat the planet and keep it warm. And the Sky, who gave breath to the planet, cast rain and wind across the globe, and took it away. So in tune with their element, they came to fight over dominion. The volcanos, liquid rock and fire, fought between the Sun and the Earth. The rain, water of the oceans, suspended in air, fought between the Moon and the Sky. Light-ning, between The Sky and Sun. And the celestial dance between the Sun and the Moon, neither winning in their chase against the other.
The Void, seeing what the had created, placed life upon it. The first children. They took his im-age, albeit much smaller versions, with fractions of fractions of his power. And then he forgot about them. What is an ant to a Primordial?
The First Children then created their own religion. Thoughts, ideas: Love, War, Passion, Peace, Magic, Wisdom, and hundreds or thousands more. They took on a life of their own and became gods themselves. The First Children, jealous of this creation of theirs fought a war, but an idea cannot be killed. The First Children were defeated and banished, and the Old Gods reigned su-preme. In their stead, they created the humans, the elves, the dwarves, and more. Most, but not all, of the life on the planet sprung from them. The more the inhabitants worships their ideas, the more powerful they became. Until they became too powerful. Legends say they feared what would happen if they were left unchecked. Justice, turned to Vengeance. Love, turned to Lust. Wisdom, became Cunning. Passion to Wrath. So they left, returning to a forest as deep and dark and endless as the oceans, to sleep until such a time as the inhabitants had forgotten about them, or died out completely.
Millenia later, the New Gods rose up. More clever than the humans, stronger than the dwarves, more immortal than the elves, these beautiful beings appeared almost overnight, drawing follow-ers to their side. They revealed themselves to their closest followers to be the humanoid forms of dragons, though no one knew of them as the First Children anymore. They were not true gods, and were capable of mating with the denizens of Eale. However, their monstrous, half dragon, half humanoid offspring were infertile. These became the High Priests of the New Religion.
There are more religions in Eale than just these, but these two are the most popular. Old Gods, Vs New Gods. There are cults that venerate the primordials, but they care not, and do not listen. There is the three-headed god of the plainsmen. The ghostly god of the bog, and more. Even the Old Gods aren’t sure where some of them came from. For they possess power, but it is some-thing entirely unlike their own.
Not all obscure gods are hidden.
Not all obscure gods were forgotten.
Some sit across from you.
All aglow in laughter and mirth.
